Abstract
The research aims to evaluate a Welsh language programme rolled out in English Medium (EM) primary schools by the leading language course provider called 'Say Something In Welsh' (a collaboration with the National Centre for Learning Welsh). It further aims to explore the relationship between students' proficiency, socio-economic status, and their motivation to continue speaking and learning Welsh. The research involves three methods: i) school based Cluster Randomised Control Trials; ii) twenty interviews with learners iii) a survey of teaching staff. The sample will include EM schools located in the regions of Wales with the lowest proportion of Welsh speakers and schools will be stratified by local council area and socio-economic composition. This will ensure that these areas are equally represented, and that socio-economic background is taken into account. The ethical considerations of researching young people and within schools are noted and BERA and SOCSI ethical guidelines/measures made reference to. Lone researcher protocols will be followed.
