The Radical Art of Swinging London: Challenging Narratives of 'British Pop'

Lead Research Organisation: University of Bristol
Department Name: School of Humanities

Abstract

My PhD will make a major contribution to how we understand British art of the
1960s: rather than viewing the 'Royal College Style' as a local form of Pop Art, it will
restore the early works of six British artists to their rightful place within the decade's
international cultural vanguard.
The project has the following research questions:
1. Why is Pop Art a problematic framework for understanding the 'Royal College
Style'?
2. How did the form and style of Royal College works suggest radical new modes
of picture-making?
3. How did the content of Royal College works raise critical issues of gender,
sexuality, and post-colonial politics?
4. Within which international contexts did exhibitions place and interpret the Royal
College Style?
