Gene editing of cultured plant stem cells to biomanufacture sustainable phytochemicals

Lead Research Organisation: University of Edinburgh
Department Name: Sch of Biological Sciences

Abstract

This BBSRC Industrial CASE studentship is a collaboration between Unilever Plc, the University of Edinburgh and Green Bioactives Ltd. The successful applicant will be predominantly located at the Institute of Molecular Plant Sciences, University of Edinburgh but may also undertake research at Unilever Plc acquiring cutting-edge commercial and research skills.

The Studentship will develop novel transformation and associated gene editing technologies for cultured plant stem cells to help improve yields of a natural and potentially sustainable ingredient for personal care products. This work will help facilitate the establishment of a sustainable and reliable plant cell-based biomanufacturing platform for the future production of a key ingredient, and potentially other related plant natural products, to help meet global personal care needs.

This industrial-academic collaboration provides a unique opportunity to develop a blend of commercial and academic research skills, providing a strong basis for future career development. Networking across the Unilever BBSRC CASE student cohort will be strongly encouraged and facilitated through the annual student workshop, virtual meeting, specific training courses and digital communications.
