Developing Acoustic Emission monitoring to assess lubricant performance
Lead Research Organisation:
Imperial College London
Department Name: Mechanical Engineering
Abstract
Initial tests have shown that monitoring high frequency elastic stress waves emitted from sliding components has the potential to provide information regarding the contact conditions and in particular additive film behaviour. This project will study noise emission from single asperity contacts to understand the generation mechanisms in detail. Then a range of lubricants and additives will be tested in order to characterise their effects on noise emission. Following this, tests will be carried on actual engine components to prove AE's effectiveness in practical applications.
