The Co-Construction of Legally Relevant Stories in Investigative Interviews of US Police Officers Involved in Fatal Shootings

Lead Research Organisation: CARDIFF UNIVERSITY
Department Name: School of English Communication and Philosophy

Abstract

Despite police misconduct, and therefore investigations into this misconduct, being part of police culture, there have been no academic studies (other than my own - Lukic, 2018) on the discourse of police interviews of police officers who have been accused of misconduct/crime (henceforth 'police suspects'). More specifically, there has never been a study on how a police suspect's dual identity may affect the narrative and linguistic choices of interlocutors in a police interrogation. My aim in this project is to investigate the complex relationship between identity, power, and narrative construction in the interrogation of police suspects.
