Drawings by Joseph Beuys in the Collection of ARTIST ROOMS: Cataloguing, Analysis and Contextualisation

Abstract
This research proposal is a response to the invitation to submit applications for the CDP project "Drawings by Joseph Beuys in the Collection of ARTIST ROOMS: Cataloguing, Analysis and Contextualisation"1. I am applying because I have a long-standing interest in German Art and believe Beuys to be one of the most significant post-war German artists, much loved in Germany but generally under-appreciated in the UK. I view the early drawings as a key to understanding the development of the artist and this CDP research position as an opportunity to work first-hand on Beuys works in the UK. I will gain direct experience in a museum environment (in which I want to work after my PhD qualification) and would value the opportunity to promote a better UK public as well as scholarly understanding of Beuys. I can offer a strong academic background in the History of Art, fluent German, and have already accepted an unconditional offer of a place at ECA to study Beuys. I am currently preparing for this on a 6 month temporary residence in Berlin2 to access the libraries and to see Beuys' works around Germany first-hand.
