The effect of shear stresss on lubricant behaviour
Lead Research Organisation:
Imperial College London
Department Name: Mechanical Engineering
Abstract
The project investigates in situ conditions in engineering contacts under high pressure high shear conditions. The aim is to investigate the effect of molecular structure on the rheology. The project is highly interdisciplinary, implementing fluorescent spectroscopy techniques.

Description | Understanding the flow of a lubricant under high pressure and high shear relating to automotive systems such as engines and transmissions. The flow governs the friction through the contacts. The aim is to understand the applicability of common flow assumptions, the conditions where they break down and the physical parameters governing the flow and therefore friction. In this work, we have made specific progress in developing novel in situ techniques to look inside the high pressure tribological contacts and measure the flow and parameter governing the flow. The work is vital for knowledge in low friction and high friction (traction) automotive systems. |
Exploitation Route | To develop a novel velocimetry technique to understand the flow behaviour under isothermal conditions. This would be vital for modelling elastohydrodynamic friction and advancing the field of tribology. |
