Buzz Saw Noise Propogation in Steady Distorted Intake Flows

Lead Research Organisation: University of Southampton
Department Name: Faculty of Engineering & the Environment

Abstract

Noise is a major environmental impact of civil aviation. Reducing aircraft noise is critical to the growth of air transport and to the future of the UK aircraft industry. This project will focus on the prediction of supersonic fan noise, known colloquially as "buzz-saw" noise, which is generated by high-bypass-ratio turbofan engines. This noise source is particularly apparent at take-off. The key aim will be to develop new prediction methods which can simulate the nonlinear propagation and radiation of sound from turbofan intakes, including its propagation through non-uniform flow and absorption by acoustic lining on the duct walls. The work will involve computational fluid dynamics and computational aeroacoustics, theoretical modelling and validation studies using experimental data from Rolls-Royce fan rig tests.
