Promoting health and wellbeing through alleviating domestic violence: a mixed-method study to address domestic violence in the UK Muslim population an

Lead Research Organisation: Brunel University London
Department Name: Life Sciences

Abstract

Domestic violence (DV) affects 8.5% of females and 4.5% of males in the UK annually, equating 1.4 million woman and 700,000 men (ONS, 2015). The impact of DV within the life of an individual, and as a wider ripple effect within society, has been described as a journey of survival (Smith, 2003) which has profound impacts on the health and wellbeing of individuals, their families and communities. The human and emotional costs are estimated to be £26 million per day (Coy & Kelly, 2011)
Research demonstrates the potential success of tailored interventions within the criminal justice system in making significant individual transformations (Lambrick & Glaser, 2004), followed by a positive ripple effect to the health and wellbeing of individual communities and society as a whole.
This study will address DV in the UK Muslim community. The UK Muslim prison population has risen to 15% in 2016 compared to 8% in 2002 and is the third largest religious cohort within the prison setting. Domestic violence is known to occur in the Muslim community, but current research of DV within the Muslim community is minimal and narrowly focused, e.g. on constructs of abusive personalities (Dutton, 1994), perpetrator gender consequences (Caldwell, 2012), and childhood contributory factors (Dutton & White, 2012). Within research in the sexual violence field (Blagden, Winder & Gregson, et al, 2014), studies conducted with religious perpetrators tend to focus on those from a Christian denomination (Eshuys & Smallbone, 2006). Similarly, present DV interventions programmes do not target the specific religious and cultural contexts of DV in the Muslim community.

Aim: To improve understanding of the occurrence of domestic violence in the Muslim community and its impacts on health and wellbeing to inform preventative interventions and desistance strategies for perpetrators
To increase knowledge and understanding of community views of the nature, occurrence and health and wellbeing impacts of DV in the Muslim community, and the processes through which these views are formed
To increase knowledge and understanding of perpetrator views of the nature, occurrence and health and wellbeing impacts of DV in the Muslim community, and the processes through which these views are formed
To understand the impact of current DV treatment programmes and potential contributors for reducing recidivism and encouraging desistance
To make recommendations for enhancing effectiveness of preventative intervention programmes for DV in the Muslim community.

As a partial inside researcher with proven experience of working in the field, and having gained the support of Imams interviewed to date for my MSc project, I have a strong foundation upon which this research can be developed. The qualitative data from the community will take place within the East Midlands; the data collection with perpetrators will be conducted in HMP Whatton and HPM Stafford. The research will consist of two studies and will use a mixed methods approach:
Conclusion
Information dissemination of how research findings translate into improving health and wellbeing at both an individual and collective level, between professionals, practitioners and voluntary sector including faith based organisations.
Inform current policy and practice in regards to treatment programmes, with increased presence of protective factors based on the GLM model indicating greater treatment effectiveness and potential for positive change.
Findings/recommendations for practice to be further disseminated through relevant conference presentations and journal publications.

Description The research data is at present being analysed and findings written up. Comprehensive study findings cannot yet be provided however the following has been identified to date:
- Faith based protective factors are deemed to be present which participants felt could help contribute to alleviating and preventing domestic violence and abuse in the UK Muslim population.
- Numerous factors at a community level were felt to have contributed to the issue of domestic violence and abuse. Education is being expressed as being key to changing this.
- A need for further training and resources for staff working in the field has been highlighted.

Key objectives of the research are in the process of being met. The study design required a slight amendment due to no participants coming forward for one study however, this was subsequently revised and the overall study aims still addressed.

Update 2021:
- The data gathered through the research has led to the development of a model demonstrating how domestic violence and abuse manifests within UK Muslim communities and what the means for interventions. This is currently being finalised and written as an empirical chapter with potential journal submission intended.

Update 2022:
- Viva completed and successfully passed in December 2021, minor amendments in progress.
- The developed model is being considered for publication within a special edition on Gender Based Violence in the Journal of Social Sciences.
- Testing the efficacy of the model is currently being discussed with two organisations and is set to commence in the next couple of months.

Update 2023
- Paper now published in above mentioned journal.
- Testing model has been difficult as practitioners do not have time for extra paperwork, therefore exploring how knowledge can be shared without creating extra paperwork.
- Requested to apply the model in cases of stalking behaviours and honour based abuse, academic paper written collaboratively with a colleagues from another institution and now awaiting publication (in press) in a textbook.
Exploitation Route Once findings are finalised over the next few months, how these will be taken forward will become clearer. Several options are currently being explored but need to be refined further.

Update 2021:
The model that has been developed has potential to add new knowledge to the subject area and inform current interventions in the field. Furthermore there is capacity for this model to apply to other related sectors such as understanding the networks surrounding rehabilitation of former offenders. This is currently a work in progress.

Update 2022:
The model can be adapted for use by other population groups. This will be more feasible once the first set of efficacy studies are conducted.
The model has also been adapted as a reintegration framework for former prisoners, testing the implementation in this regard is currently being discussed with staff from the prisons and probation service in collaboration with colleagues from another HE institution.

Update 2023
Efficacy studies have been challenging where extra paperwork is required by practitioners therefore exploring how to avoid this.
In dialogue with an organisation in Australia who specialise in domestic violence support services, exploring how the model can support their work.
The application of the reintegration framework continues to be developed, currently applying for funding to take this work further. As part of this have been working on a edited book looking at holistic approaches to reintegration. Due for publication Autumn 2023.

Description At present, the key impact has been in relation to engaging with audiences at different levels in order to discuss the subject on more open platforms. This has included at a community level, within multi-faith settings, and within secure forensic settings. Such conversations and discourses have started to pave the way for future avenues of potential impact which are yet to be fully explored. Further impact is currently being worked towards within academic settings. Update 2021: Impact has since been extended to include engagement with MET police safeguarding teams. Update 2022: Impact since last update has been increased dissemination of findings with academia and community groups - allowing for the materials to be utilised within HE teaching and within community contexts. Training has also been delivered to numerous staff from domestic violence support organisations, with positive feedback. This has led to discussions around testing the efficacy of the model within these organisations and plans are currently being finalised. Update 2023: Testing of the model still in progress, practitioners struggling to apply model if having to fill in extra paperwork therefore now exploring how information about the model can be disseminated to practitioners for their awareness without creating extra work. Increased engagement with community level practitioners and dissemination of research internationally. Currently engaged in conversations with an organisation in Australia looking at how the web model can support their work.

Title A web model of domestic violence and abuse
Description The web model of domestic violence (DVA) and abuse maps out how DVA occurs within UK Muslim communities, with a particular focus on interconnected relationships.
Type Of Material Improvements to research infrastructure
Year Produced 2022
Provided To Others? No
Impact This model provides a unique insight into DVA for UK Muslim communities that is not considered by existing approaches. Due to its flexible nature, it has the potential to be adapted for use by other minority and/or close knit communities. It is intended that this model will be used to support practitioners working with DVA survivors in a supportive capacity. Current discussions are under way to begin this process.
