Sex differences in Cognitive Performance, Cognitive Decline, and Risk of Dementia: A Lifecourse Approach
Lead Research Organisation:
University College London
Department Name: Epidemiology and Public Health
Abstract
Using data from the Whitehall II study, this project has two aims:
1. To investigate sex differences in cognitive performance, rate of cognitive decline, and
risk of dementia, with attention to cohort differences. There is some evidence that sex
differences in cognitive performance have been attenuated in more recent birth-cohorts
due to better access to education (Singh-Manoux 2010). How such differences are
reflected in rate of cognitive decline and risk of dementia is unclear.
2. To examine interactions between sex and risk factors (social, behavioural, and
biological) for their role in differences in cognitive performance, cognitive decline, and
risk of dementia. The study has a wide array of risk factors, listed in the table below.
