Urban vitality: the value and provenance of new forms of data

Lead Research Organisation: University College London
Department Name: Geography

Abstract

POLS0012 has given me a baseline understanding of R and statistical analysis which will be necessary for
the PhD project.
With BASC0005, I have explored Python, and various methods of representing data visually. Knowing
multiple programming languages can add diversity and be helpful for the project, and data visualisation
will be a key aspect of representing the data in space for this research.
Finally, with BASC0023, I was tasked of using data to draw conclusions on market strategies. As this
project is focused on urban vitality and retail, this will help me assess results with an approach to
consumer behaviour in mind.

This PhD will make use of a number of key data holdings from the ESRC Consumer Data Research Centre.
The data supplied from the project partner - Huq Industries - will supply their data via the CDRC data
service and supplementary information will be supplied pertaining to high street occupancy and footfall,
which are also CDRC indicators.
