Application of Machine Learning, Augmented Reality Technologies to Living with Macular Disease

Lead Research Organisation: University of Nottingham
Department Name: School of Computer Science

Abstract

Macular disease is a leading cause of visual disability and blindness related to age in the UK. In many cases, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) can result in the total loss of central vision. However, currently assistive technologies must be put through lengthy trials to assess their effectiveness. To improve upon this, I propose to model portions of the human visual system in silico, using modern AI methods. Modelling the entire visual system is not feasible but exploring the limits of current AI technologies may allow for modelling the effects of AMD on vision. This could then allow for experimentation regarding the manipulation of images to improve the visual capabilities of those suffering from AMD. Producing a working model of human vision will allow us to simulate potential benefits prior to clinical trials, potentially eliminating many unworkable solutions and reducing wasted effort.
