Simulations of neutron star-black hole mergers

Lead Research Organisation: University of Southampton
Department Name: Sch of Mathematical Sciences

Abstract

This project will investigate the dynamics of black holes and neutron stars via fully nonlinear numerical simulations in Einstein's general theory of relativity. The aim is to improve current models of gravitational waves from energetic black-hole neutron-star merger events, feeding into the current effort to detect such signals and use the results to probe physics under extreme conditions. We will pay particular attention to the microphysics encoded in the supranuclear matter equation of state and further improve recent efforts to introduce large-eddy modes in general relativity (in order to deal with the development of turbulence during the merger phase).
