Sustainable Venture Development Partners (Domestic Energy Storage)

Abstract

Sustainable Ventures Development Partners (“SVDP”) works with investors, entrepreneurial
managers, and corporates to originate, build and grow sustainable companies. Growth of these
companies is de-risked through access to our extensive network, sector expertise and venture
development experience.
SVDP propose the creation of an energy services company providing distributed energy
storage solutions to domestic homes, lowering household electricity bills and reducing peak
grid electricity demand.
The United Kingdom has made a commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least
80% below base year levels by 2050. Meeting this target will require substantial changes to
the generation mix, pose significant challenges for the energy system in matching supply and
demand but also create opportunities for the deployment of electricity and heat storage.
The Domestic Energy Storage (“DES”) approach will initially deploy an integrated battery
and control system that will charge using night-time electricity or excess micro-generation and
supply household needs during the day. The system will be straightforward to install and is
particularly suited to homes with smart meters, renewable technologies and electrical heating.
Recent advances in battery technology, partially driven by the requirements of EV
deployment, have resulted in sharp cost declines. Initial research suggests that the proposed
business model is commercially attractive. However, this assessment relies on certain market
and technology assumptions. This study’s objective is to further develop the householder
proposition, understand the aggregated grid management revenue streams and produce a
technology development plan prior to securing proof-of-concept funding.
The proposed DES business is expected to directly create 50 new jobs, accelerate the
provision of a non-disruptive solution to householders and contribute to closing the 4GW
additional contracted balancing services envisaged by National Grid.
