Abstract

Think of how easy it is to use Google. Type in a few words and get immediate results, use
these results to springboard to the next question and then another. In business, research and
personal life, millions of people use spreadsheets as a simple tool to get similar answers from
their own data. Sadly, with spreadsheets, people are denied this Google-like flexibility to ask
one question and connect to the next – they are denied the opportunity to discover potentially
important new information.
Consider the work of a cancer researcher; she has tens of thousands of rows of data in her
spreadsheets describing how genes behave. She also has spreadsheets describing how
different tissues (breast, prostate, skin …) react when new drugs are applied. She wants to ask
questions such as ‘which genes are behaving unusually when tissues are abnormal and what
drugs improve things’. She cannot do this easily today because examining thousands of rows
one at a time and then painstakingly finding corresponding records in other spreadsheets takes
far too long. As a result, she doesn’t try – what a lost opportunity!
Synapse has pioneered a solution to her problem; a solution that lets any person use
spreadsheets as a window to their data through which they can see and discover new
information, create reports and build mini applications to solve their specific needs.
Imagine a list of all of the restaurants in Britain. Now, imagine a separate list of reviews and
another of all UK Street addresses. Synapse will let you find ‘all Italian restaurants with a four
star review within 2 miles of the City Centre of Leeds’.
Previously, expensive programmers might take weeks to deliver this kind of capability, but
with Synapse ordinary people will be able to unlock the latent value in their data as quickly as
they can type the questions that interest them
Synapse provides a novel solution for personal information discovery by simplifying the
process to achieve better, faster and cheaper answers
