Saietta Axial Flux Motor Productionisation

Lead Participant: SAIETTA GROUP LIMITED

Abstract

Saietta has invested heavily over a number of years to engineer a step change in propulsion motors for electric vehicles. The result is an axial flux design that is unique and patent protected, delivering class leading performance at the price points required to secure volume orders from 2/3/4 wheel EV OEMs. The technology is also designed to be modular, meaning we can supply solutions from scooters to buses.

The market is ready and we are ready to deploy. In short, the efficiency, power density and torque characteristics, plus the compact form factor, plus the innovative design for mass manufacture means that we can be first globally to bring superior axial-flux technology to the mass market.

Prospective clients are very interested. However, for us to fully capitalise on the commercial opportunity, it's vitally important that we now fast-track our technology to mass production. The investment into our R&D through APC16 is the support we need to achieve our objectives on time and to the quality levels required.

Working with a UK supply base including Brandauer and AEV, Saietta will build a pilot plant in the UK to manufacture up to 10,000 motors per year. It is planned to increase production to over 150,000 units per year within five years of the project end. The development of the UK supply chain is a key part of the project. Brandauer, who specialise in precision stamping and progression tooling along with AEV, specialists in the manufacture of electrically insulating resins will partner with Saietta to develop processes and components to support the move towards volume manufacture.

This project will deliver significant increases in capacity and capability in the UK electric motors supply chain that are necessary for the decarbonisation of transport. The project will put the UK at the forefront of high value axial flux motor manufacture, creating jobs and increasing revenues across the supply chain and is very closely aligned with the objectives of the UK Industrial Strategy.
