EuroAgeNet: European Partnerships in Ageing Science

Lead Research Organisation: University of Liverpool
Department Name: Musculoskeletal & Ageing Science

Abstract

This application led by 'ECMage' is a joint application from 5 of the UK Ageing Networks; ECMage (Extracellular Matrix (ECM) ageing across the life course interdisciplinary research network), CFIN (Cognitive Frailty Interdisciplinary Network), Food4Years (Food for-added-life-years: putting research into action), BLAST (Building Links in Ageing Science and Translation) and AGENTS (Ageing and Nutrient Sensing Network).

The proposal aims to create a network of researchers, Institutions and Research Centres across Europe (EuroAgeNet) to catalyse and develop ageing research ideas, projects, research findings and positive outcomes for the ageing population. Collaborative ventures within the network will be supported with bilateral scoping visits for staff to and from the UK, subsequently followed by targeted exchange visits for skills training, and training events or workshops.

To bring together researchers across Europe with UK researchers, the network will run events to enable researchers to talk in depth about their research interests, and enhance understanding of areas of complementary research. Such activities are designed to create cross-disciplinary insights into key aspects of the ageing process, to prime researchers to respond to opportunities for targeted research funding and to translate their knowledge into real-life benefits for the ageing population.

Technical Summary

The UK-European ageing research network (EuroAgeNet) has been developed by 5 of the UK Ageing research Networks: ECMage (Extracellular Matrix (ECM) ageing across the life course interdisciplinary research network), CFIN (Cognitive Frailty Interdisciplinary Network), Food4Years (Food for-added-life-years: putting research into action), BLAST (Building Links in Ageing Science and Translation) and AGENTS (Ageing and Nutrient Sensing Network).

Using our collective expertise and wide-ranging connections in the ageing research space across Europe we have created a pan-European consortium of partners across 12 European countries and 20 institutions with research interests ranging from the basic mechanisms of cellular and extracellular ageing, food & nutrition, cognitive frailty and technological model development.

Leveraging scoping visits, research exchanges, training activities and events will enable the development and strengthening of collaborations across the network. Activities will be inclusive, enabling participation of a diverse set of researchers and will be designed to increase the quality and scope and responsiveness of ageing research within Europe and linked to the UK.

The scientific aims of the partnership span the remit of each partnering UK Ageing network, encompassing matrix biology/ bioengineering/materials, cognitive frailty, food and nutrition, the mechanistic drivers of ageing and routes to translation. Scientific areas of focus include assessment and targeting of extracellular matrix alterations during ageing, harnessing the potential of extracellular vesicles and considering the validity of in vitro and in vivo models of ageing. Collaborations will further focus on interplay between nutritional factors at cellular, organismal and food systems levels during ageing, improving understanding and targeting methods for the conjunction of physical frailty with cognitive impairment without dementia, and mechanistic targeting of neurodegeneration.

Description Introduction of DrinKit project in care homes and hospitals
Geographic Reach Europe
Policy Influence Type Contribution to new or improved professional practice
Impact Overall, we are seeing gradual impacts of the DrinKit in UK care homes. Diane Bunn is currently involved in a Norfolk-based pilot project funded by the NHS, to assess use of DrinKit to improve hydration in care homes. Work is ongoing and still to be evaluated.

PI Contribution DrinKit , a hydration care resource for use in care homes, was created by researchers at the University of East Anglia Hydrate Group: https://www.uea.ac.uk/groups-and-centres/uea-hydrate-group. Diane co-leads this group. In 2023 the UEA Hydrate Group collaborated with a team in Brazil (Associação Cuidadosa) to translate the DrinKit into Brazilian Portuguese and to implement it in care homes. In 2024, Diane, Anna and Aline collaborated to create DrinKit Italia and use as a resource to support service improvements in two settings: a care home and a spinal injuries rehabilitation unit.

Description BBC's World service 'The Food Chain' program
Form Of Engagement Activity A press release, press conference or response to a media enquiry/interview
Part Of Official Scheme? No

Primary Audience Media (as a channel to the public)
Results and Impact Contributed to the BBC's World service 'The Food Chain' program "What does collagen do for you" regarding the potential health benefits of taking hydrolysed collagen supplements. This was broadcast on 25th August 2024 and is available via the URL below. This involved a pre-interview discussion with the producer, a recorded interview with the presenter and answering questions by email during editing. After the broadcast the producer stated that they received lots of emails from listeners indicating it is a topic people are really interested in, and that 'The Food Chain' is a popular download from the World Service.

Description Visit to nursing homes and hospitals in Milan
Form Of Engagement Activity A formal working group, expert panel or dialogue
Part Of Official Scheme? No
Geographic Reach International
Primary Audience Patients, carers and/or patient groups
Results and Impact "During Diane's visit to Milan, 29th July - 1st August, Diane presented at four meetings:
1. Visit to University of Milan to meet with Dr Stefano Terzoni and Professor Maura Lusignani (Researchers in the nursing department) to discuss hydration and nutrition research at University of Milan, including DrinKit Italia. Anna has collaborated with them on nutrition and other research in geriatric nursing.
2. Visit to a nursing home, where the DrinKit project is being tested, to meet staff and familiarise with an Italian Nursing Home. Meeting arranged by Anna for some of the care home staff. During this meeting, Diane presented on her UK Hydration Care Research work, including the DrinKit project, Dr Aline Salla presented on DrinKit Brasil (Aline lives and works in Italy, but works on both DrinKit Brasil & DrinKit Italia) and Dr Anna Castaldo and Giulia Giacomel presented on DrinKit Italia and how it is being implemented in the Italian Nursing Home. Approximately 25 staff attended from a range of roles.
3. Visit and meet with staff at Hospital CTO, Milan, where DrinKit is being implemented on the spinal unit in a service improvement project.
4. Meeting arranged by Dr Anna Castaldo at the Hospital Pini : ""Enhancing Hydration Care in hospitals and Care Homes - DrinKit Italia"". Approximately 60 staff attended, and presentations included Dr Diane Bunn, Dr Anna Castaldo, Giulia Giacomel and other speakers with specialist hydration knowledge."
