Linear control of fluid flow

Description | The problem of controlling the boundary layer of a spatially developing flow is of importance for drag reduction on air and marine craft. The main objective of the control is prevent the flow becoming turbulent and so maintain the flow as laminar. Tractable models of the flow over a flat plate were developed and it is proposed to control the flow by a solving an optimal control problem. It is shown that the problem can be formulated and solved, and in doing so, the control that minimizes the maximum perturbation energy can be obtained. This provides the foundation for an MPC approach as well as providing performance limits for the system. |
Exploitation Route | An MPC approach that resamples the flow state at each sample point can be implemented. |
