Description The study found that we need to consider a range of issues in seeking to change children's school travel patterns. Both mothers and children demonstrate complex patterns of decision-making in terms of their journey to school mobilities. It is not only children's mobility but the mobility patterns of mothers that need to be taken into account. Mothers' mobility patterns reflect an increasingly multidimensional mothering role. Everyday risk is important in terms of decision making about children's mobility. Young people take an active part in decision-making about their mobility. They develop their own experiences in public space and risk outlooks. For children the journey to school is about more than getting from A to B; it is an important in-between space, particularly for learning and emotional and social development. Children engage with issues in different ways from adults and visual methods allow them to communicate more effectively.
Exploitation Route In changing perspectives on children's mobilities and the involvement of children in decision-making.

Description The fellowship has benefitted me in a number of ways, both professionally and personally. It has provided the opportunity to effectively disseminate the results of my research to my research participants and to a range of policy-makers and practitioners as well as to the wider academic community. In doing so, I feel that I have contributed to knowledge advancement and to academic debate across a number of social science disciplines. I have benefitted personally through developing my skills in research and presentation, and through developing contacts with colleagues in social science from across the UK and in Europe. I have developed an ongoing working relationship with a number of academics and policy-makers through my fellowship.
