Description The Virtual Atomic and Molecular Data Centre (VAMDC) Consortium is a worldwide consortium which federates atomic and molecular databases through an e-science infrastructure
and an organisation to support this activity. About 90% of the inter-connected databases handle data that are used for the interpretation of astronomical spectra and for modelling in many fields of astrophysics. Recently the VAMDC Consortium has connected databases from the radiation damage and the plasma communities, as well as promoting the publication of data from Indian institutes. This grant reviewed how the VAMDC Consortium (and particularly the UK members) are organised for the optimal distribution of atomic and molecular data for scientific research. Key outcomes were study of how to develop an international protocol for reporting of uncertainties in calculated data and the need to provide evaluation of data in proffered data bases for the user communities. The UK role and leadership in these areas was recognised and has been developed with the UK taking leading role in trwo subsequent data base projects RADAM ( atomic and molecular physics for Radiation damage and radiotherapy http://radamdb.mbnresearch.com) and VESPA on line data service for planetary science part of Europlanet a European research Infrastructure which I chair and currently UK leads http://www.europlanet-2020-ri.eu/
Exploitation Route VAMDC and its architecture is being used in wider EU programmes such as Europlanet http://www.europlanet-2020-ri.eu/ and its VESPA (planetary science) http://www.europlanet-vespa.eu/ and PSWS (space weather) http://planetaryspaceweather-europlanet.irap.omp.eu/

Description This project is part of a wider programme to develop a database for Atomic and molecular physics , the VAMDC project (www.vamdc.eu) funded as part of EU FP7 programme. Under H2020 this is being further developed as part of the Europlanet research infrastructure http://www.europlanet-2020-ri.eu/ and since 2020 https://www.europlanet-society.org/europlanet-2024-ri. Access to databases are provided on line through the VAMDC portal and are used by industry (particularly plasma electronics) environmental community and through development of RADAM database the medical physics/radiotherapy community. Software development has been a significant part of the programme. Subsequently the database has been expanded for use with the radiotherapy and radiation chemistry community via the RADAM database http://radamdb.mbnresearch.com.
