Development and analysis of recognition memory tasks in humans

Abstract

1. We will continue the development of a context-modulated recall (CMR) task in people, using a match/mismatch procedure. Pictures (e.g., faces) will be presented along with 'contextual' stimuli (e.g., outdoor scenes). Each picture will have its own unique context. 2. Many picture-context pairs will be used but we can consider only two pairs for the match/mismatch test. During training people will learn about the co-occurrence of picture A with context X and picture B with context Y. During match/mismatch testing, both pictures A and B are presented with context X. People are expected to direct their gaze toward picture B -- the picture, which is unexpected with context X. 3. Different hypotheses have been offered to account for CMR, many based on analysis of brain systems in rats. We will look at one theoretical account (Robinson & Bonardi, 2014) using a computer model. We will test this account by making slight adjustments to the basic CMR task. Training will be given in stimulus generation, programming (PsychoPy) and statistical presentation and analysis.
