RF Techniques Applied to Additive Manufacturing

Lead Research Organisation: CARDIFF UNIVERSITY
Department Name: Sch of Engineering

Abstract

This 4-year fully funded PhD opportunity will involve working in the School of Engineering at Cardiff University in conjunction with Renishaw PLC to investigate the use of RF fields as an aid to additive manufacturing.

The project will study the types of RF applicators that can be used and how an RF system could be designed to fit a commercial AM system. You will focus on the use of solid state sources for the generation of RF power, and also identify the optimised RF frequencies and power levels needed for effective application in additive manufacturing.

The research will assess the physical and mechanical properties of the resulting manufactured parts aided by RF methods (both metals and ceramics), how they change with different RF treatment methodologies, and how they compare with parts manufactured by conventional means.
