Making vitamin H sustainable - developing biotin overproduction approaches

Abstract

My research aims to create a functional and improved BioB enzyme to overall improve the production of biotin. My objectives are to create variants of BioB enzyme that have a faster turnover rate than existing E. coli BioB and allow us to overcome the first kinetic bottleneck in the biotin biosynthesis pathway. The ways in which I hope to achieve this is through rational design create mutants of this enzyme in E. coli. This will enable me confirm the range of impact that may be accessible in the natural enzymes and the role of these residues on the reactivity.

Results and Impact A marque was setup in the square for University of Nottingham students in research. The aim was to promote women in science and exhibit our research. Activities were setup aswell to encourage children to participate and show how interesting science can be!

Results and Impact Our research group advertised what kind of research we are doing broadly in a creative manner that enabled the children and the parents to engage with us. We had several activities including: jigsaw pieces for the enzyme and substrate complex; an amylase experiment (where kids spit in a petri dish and pipetted it into a tube of starch and dye and watch the colour to change from purple to colourless) to demonstrate the enzymes present in your saliva digesting the starch; the marble run, to demonstrate the different reaction pathways and how we can alter the pathway to achieve the right correct product; lastly we had a makeshift reactor (flask) to show the upscale fermenters process. Overall, we had a many children interested and asked interesting questions and discussions.
