Investigating Jupiter's Auroras and Magnetosphere using the Hubble Space Telescope and Juno

Lead Research Organisation: University of Leicester
Department Name: Physics and Astronomy

Abstract

In this project, Hubble Space Telescope observations of Jupiter's FUV auroras will be analyzed, potentially in conjunction with Juno data, in order to examine how Jupiter's magnetosphere and auroras vary with key system parameters, such as rate of plasma mass outflow from Io. These observations can also be compared with models of the planet's magnetodisc structure to build up a coherent picture of how Jupiter's magnetosphere behaves. This project is computational in nature, involving data analysis and potentially computer modelling using the Python programming language.
