Abstract

This project proposes to study the socio-cultural impacts of American bases in Britain during
the Cold War. While the Cold War had many cultural impacts, the literature on
'Americanisation' tends to focus on material culture or subsumes nuances of cultural
change within studies of 'popular culture'. My proposal, by contrast, analyses how the
interactions between American bases and local British communities had tangible impacts,
affecting British attitudes, and life more widely, aiding understanding of how the Cold War
was experienced socio-culturally and politically in Britain.
