Lead Research Organisation: Brunel University London
Department Name: Social and Political Science

Abstract

Using content analysis and narrative thematic analysis, the proposed study aims to develop 'The Masculine Female Grotesque' as a new theoretical concept that furthers understanding of the unruly, transgressive female body, both in narrative and in the U.S. women's prison. This research proposal first introduces literature around narrative, 'The Female Grotesque,' 'female masculinity' and the Prison Industrial Complex before outlining the project aims. Next, the U.S. web-television drama, Orange is the New Black (2013-), is discussed as a case study for the proposed investigation before unpacking the research questions and methods that will be addressed and employed to achieve its aims.
