Growing sideways through the screen

Lead Research Organisation: University of Glasgow
Department Name: College of Arts

Abstract

This project investigates how adult trans subjects utilise their nostalgic memories of children's screen media consumption in the formation of their present day trans identities. Within the context of what has been termed the 'trans tipping point', which refers to the increased visibility of trans representations and issues in the public sphere alongside an increase in the outed trans population since 2013 (Stryker, 2017) this project will investigate the nexus of nostalgia, childhood and screen media as a way to explore questions of trans identity formation whilst expanding upon and putting to the test theories of queer spectatorship and nostalgia through the development of a qualitative audience study.
