Abstract
With this PhD, I will investigate the effects of Northern Ireland's 'Newcomer policy' on migrant children,
and the management of migration in Northern Ireland. The Newcomer policy was introduced in 2009 to
address the needs of children who '[do] not have satisfactory language skills to participate fully in the
school curriculum'. In the context of the securitisation of immigration across the UK and Ireland, the idea
of 'Newcomers' presents these children as outsiders and as a potential threat for security and order.
