Abstract

Hyperpolarization methods enhance nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) signals by up to 5 orders of magnitude, with transformative implications for a wide range of sciences including chemistry, biology, physics and medicine. Prof Malcolm H Levitt FRS has been awarded a 5-year grant from the European Research Council to develop molecular sensors and magnetic resonance imaging agents based on hyperpolarized NMR. This major project is highly interdisciplinary and includes quantum theory, experimental spectroscopy, physics, chemical synthesis and biochemistry. The studentship will focus on the nuclear magnetic resonance aspects of the project but will allow close interaction with the other involved areas as well.
