The role of R-loops in trinucleotide expansion diseases

Lead Research Organisation: University of Oxford
Department Name: Sir William Dunn Sch of Pathology

Abstract

R-loops are nucleic acid structures, composed of an RNA/DNA hybrid and displaced single-stranded DNA. With an array of physiological roles, R-loops have also been implicated in human pathologies. This project aims to further uncover the molecular mechanisms that underpin R-loop-associated diseases. There will be a particular focus on Friedreich's ataxia, as a model of trinucleotide expansion diseases. Understanding the mechanisms behind R-loop function in Friedreich's ataxia will pave the way for the development of new therapeutic approaches for this group of disorders.
