Chaperones and the response to protein misfolding stress

Lead Research Organisation: University of Manchester

Abstract

This PhD Project Proposal falls within the remit of the Industrial Biotechnology (IB) BBSRC priority area. We aim to use a combination of lab and computational approaches to provide a systematic understanding of the biology of protein misfolding stress. This will include defining the rules and principles governing the formation and removal of aggregates under different stress conditions, which can then be exploited to design strategies to mediate against aggregate formation. Identifying and characterizing the chaperones that protect against protein misfolding stress will benefit industrial researchers interested in maximising protein production from biological systems for biotechnological and biopharmaceutical applications. This is fundamental bioscience that will generate tools applicable to the optimal expression of recombinant proteins from yeast cell cultures.
