UK ALMA Regional Centre Node Support: 2016 - 2020
Lead Research Organisation:
University of Manchester
Department Name: Physics and Astronomy
Abstract
The Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) is the largest, most complex and most expensive ground-based telescope yet built. It will remain the instrument of choice for the study of star formation across cosmic time for decades to come. The UK ALMA Regional Centre (ARC) Node provides direct support for UK astronomers using ALMA. This includes providing training and face-to-face support for UK astronomers as well as contributing to a range of activities at the European ARC and the Joint ALMA Observatory to help provide the highest quality data possible to UK astronomers and open up additional capabilities on the telescope. Through these activities the UK ARC Node helps the UK astronomy community extract the maximum scientific return on the UK's investment in ALMA.
Planned Impact
The outreach work which the UK ARC Node will undertake will have a direct impact on the public understanding of ALMA and the science done with it.
