Abstract
The project focused on the development of avalanche photodiodes (APDs) in optical telecommunications. This involved investigation of ohmic contacts on InGaAs and avalanche multiplication of AlGaAsSb. Measured results from the InGaAs PIN diode suggest that the contacts and bond pads were not sufficiently optimised and can have a negative impact on the bandwidth. The AlGaAsSb APD with InGaAs contact layer was found to have a gain-bandwidth product of 224 GHz. An investigation of wavelength division multiplexing, using photonic bandgap, was investigated. This could be a potential way of increasing the data transmission rates in optical telecommunication systems. A photonic crystal demultiplexer was designed with 8-10 channels, 30-40% transmission efficiency but a relatively small footprint.
