Urban Citizenship and Informality: New dynamics in the context of global urbanisation

This project will contribute to the understanding of the shifting dynamics of urban citizenship
through investigating the practices and struggles of those involved in the informal delivery of
care work in Athens and Buenos Aires.
Theoretically, it will grapple with work and time - as lived experience, as right and as resource -
and it will explore the links between care arrangements, work/time redistribution and new
citizenship imaginaries. Methodologically, it will advance the practice of collaborative inquiry
through a novel combination of ethnographic, narrative productions and participatory research
methods. Empirically, it will enrich the field with data from two countries ridden by
socio-economic crises, characterised by unemployment and precarity and yet also by
experimentation with social solidarity and care practices.

The objective of the project is to produce a novel set of rich data that can empirically
substantiate the practices and struggles of care workers and theoretically point to new avenues
for linking care, belonging and citizenship in urban contexts.
