The Circular Books Project
Lead Participant:
BOOKS & PIECES LIMITED
Abstract
The Circular Books Project will create a circular economy and more sustainable method of manufacturing for the UK publishing sector by exploring innovative materials and methods of book production for children's books that will extend book life, enable them to be re-manufactured at end-of-use and reduce the volume of books reaching landfill.
It will also lower the high carbon footprint of the children's books industry -- printing in the UK instead of relying on overseas imports.
Focusing on remanufacturing waste high-density polythene plastic (from sources such as carrier bags and milk bottles) into a pliable, printable and robust 'paper', we plan to create a series of colourful and engaging books for babies and toddlers.
The Project helps achieve UK publishing goals of ending air freight, halving its carbon footprint by 2030 and being carbon neutral by 2050\.
