GraduCheck - an Optical Sensor for Leg Ulcer Management
Lead Participant:
SFH OXFORD LIMITED
Abstract
Venous Leg Ulcers (VLUs) are a common, chronic, recurring condition and are a major cause of morbidity, pain and health service cost. Over 300,000 people in the UK suffer from VLUs at any one time and a total cost to the NHS of up to £600M p.a. (USA healthcare system 6 million and $2.5ā3.5 Bn). Graduated compression is the standard therapy for the management of VLUs. However, up to a 90% failure to apply compression bandaging accurately has been reported. The GraduCheck⢠device, developed by SFH Oxford Ltd (SFHO) is able to reverse this failure to deliver accurate graduated compression bandaging in VLUs. GraduCheck⢠is innovative with no current technologies existing that can offer the same functionality. Thus far, two patents have been filed; the first in January 2011 on the pneumatic system (granted) and the second, optical system, in February 2016. All patent filings have been through Gill Jennings and Every, London. Potential routes to market are [1] license deals [2] Establishing a commercial presence, with the aim of being acquired. SFH Oxford can generate, at year 5 after commercialization, a revenue of £33M+ per annum, with a market penetration of less than 5%. SFHO has experience in commercialization, vascular surgery and VLUs, and electronic sensor innovation and development.
