Description | We have created flexible electronics, which can curve round and with your body rather than sitting on top of it like current wearables do. This can lead to much more comfortable units, and better quality signals being collected. Importantly, our devices bridge the gap between small-scale prototyping in a University environment, to manufacturing at scale using 'roll to roll' approaches. Similar flexible electronics from other groups have typically been limited to prototyping scale manufacturing only, limiting translation. This give a base platform for us to add more functionality to in future work. |
Exploitation Route | There has been considerable interest in our wearables work, and based upon our outputs AJC is a member of the University of Manchester - Health and Safety Executive framework consultancy agreement for as-needed consultancy services, and part of the Health and Safety Executive National Core Study on Covid Transmission. We are currently investigating a framework agreement with the English Institute of Sport for making custom devices for Olympians. |

Description | This award has been instrumental in establishing our work as recognised and world leading in the space of printed flexible electronics, leading to many follow on opportunities and impacts. These have been both academic (e.g. invited papers on printed electronics roadmaps, invited presentations at international conferences) and with industry. We now have two funded projects with companies using aspects of flexible electronics and have had extensive conversations with the leading UK flexible integrated circuit fabrication house on potential applications in healthcare. For the two funded projects, both relate to products currently in development, likely to reach wider availability in the 2026/27 timeframe. Our capabilities in wearable electronics built during this award have also allowed us to contribute to the policy agenda, for example being part of a working group with Diabetes UK to scope "Ageing Well with Diabetes" with an outcome position paper from this working group now available. |

Title | ECG, EEG and IMU data for local motion artefact removal |
Description | ECG and EEG data collected from a single participant using our custom device with inertial measurement units (IMUs) placed on each electrode, to enable recording of local motion activity (accelerometer and gyroscope) during electrophysiological recordings. This is to enable improved motion artefact removal. Please see paper for description of the device, placement of the electrodes and testing procedure. Data is in CSV format, with a sample rate of 220 Hz.If using this data please cite:C. Beach, M. Li, E. Balaban, and A. J. PI Contribution | We are exploring pop-up conformable electronics, electronics which attaches directly to the skin for very long term robust connections, which can also have a 3D structure. In particular we are exploring actuated 3D antennas. We have provided expertise into the potential applications of these structures, focus particularly on their potential use as acceleration sensors. We have provided some initial designs for suitable structures that can be fabricated. |
Collaborator Contribution | Our partners in Kent have provided expertise in antennas. This allows the 3D accelerometer to be applied directly as a sensing and transmission unit, eliminating the need for conventional collection electronics which add complexity and power consumption. Our partners at the University of Illinois have provided the manufacturing and characterization capability. |
Impact | This has led to follow on funding from the EPSRC (detailed in funding section). |
