Abstract
The EPSRC-ESRC Network in Consumer Goods, Big Data and Re-Distributed Manufacturing (RECODE) aims to develop an active and engaged community through which to identify, test and evaluate a multi-disciplinary vision and research agenda associated with the application of big data in the transition towards a re-distributed manufacturing model for consumer goods.
Transforming the consumer goods industry through the use of big data and re-distributed models of manufacture poses entirely new challenges inherent to the capture, storage, analysis, visualisation and interpretation of big data. Combined with this is the cross-disciplinary requirement for radically new methods of engaging end-users, empowering customer interaction, facilitating ad-hoc supply chains, re-capturing and re-deploying valuable materials, optimising manufacturing processes, informing new user-driven design of customised goods and services, developing novel business models and implementing data-driven open innovation.
The world generates 1.7 million billion bytes of data every day and global big data technology and services is growing by 40% per year, predicted to reach USD 16.9 billion in 2015. The exponential growth of available and potentially valuable data, often referred to as big data, is already facilitating transformational change across sectors and holds enormous potential to address many of the key challenges being faced by the manufacturing industry including increasing scarcity of resources, diverse global markets and a trend towards mass customisation. The consumer goods industry, one of the world's largest sectors worth approximately USD3.2 trillion, has remained largely unchanged and is characterised by mass manufacture through multi-national corporations and globally dispersed supply chains with 80% of materials ending up in landfill. The role of re-distributed manufacturing in this sector is often overlooked, yet there is great potential, when combined with timely advancements in big data, to re-define the consumer goods industry by changing the economics and organisation of manufacturing, particularly with regard to location and scale.
RECODE will develop novel methods to engage communities of academics, international experts, user groups, government and industrial organisations to define and scope the shared multi-disciplinary vision and research agenda. New perspectives and contributions from user groups and stakeholders will be used to ensure that the vision of the network is fully inclusive and sensitive to regional trends, variances and scales. Short-term studies will be undertaken across the breadth of the theme to test and evaluate the feasibility of specific research challenges, the findings of which will contribute to an interactive roadmap representing local and global communities and research agendas of the network.
Closing the gap between manufacturers, suppliers and consumers will provide opportunities for personalisation of products and services, up scaling of local enterprise and the development of user-driven products tuned to the requirements of local markets providing economic competitiveness for the UK. Improved understanding of skills and training required for interpreting big data and transforming industries will ensure that the UK can take full advantage of opportunities for job creation. Moving towards a localised and regenerative model of consumer goods manufacture will create more efficient and effective supply chains capable of on-demand responses; increasing productivity and competitiveness of the manufacturing industry.
This challenging two year network will bring together an internationally renowned team of experts from Cranfield, Brunel, Cambridge, Manchester and Teesside universities drawing on leading-edge strengths of the host institutions and international connections with research communities, companies, business intermediaries and governance at local, national and international scales.

Engaging consumer groups will increase knowledge of UK manufacturing and debunk old-fashioned perceptions of the industry. An improved understanding of how big data can be harnessed and shared has significant opportunity for the discovery of new products, services, organisations and even industry sectors.

Findings from the network have been used to inform and influence decision making by our partners e.g. findings from the research were used internally in Cisco to support the development of a department focused around the Circular Economy. The activity and new collaborations that resulted from the network have also resulted in longer term partnerships and a significant amount of further funding both from industry and government. The network provided a key first step in this important area and outcomes associated with new collaborations, partnerships and further research wouldn't have been achieved without it. |

Title | Circular Design Tool |
Description | Circular Design Tool is a tool to select appropriate circular design strategies according to the selected business model. It builds on research carried out by RECODE-NETWORK identifying and evaluating the opportunities a re-distributed production model offers to disrupt traditional industry models when combined with big data. The current "take-make-sell-use-dispose" system, as a linear economy, is not sustainable anymore, and needs to be rethought. Design is not considered in that system as predominant element, but it should, given that Industrial Designers define to a large degree, the materials needed and the way an object will be produced, displayed, advertised, sold, used and disposed. Currently 80% of materials end up in landfills, and the only way designers can do something about is knowing the impact and possible solutions. The concept is simple; humans need to change the linear process into a circular one. This project aims to create a guide for Industrial designers, to implement Circular Economy in their process through the development of a tool, based on literature review and secondary data from experts in the field. A case study will be developed, designing a concept 3D printed sport shoe to show the application of the guide. |

Title | The Open Food Preference Marketplace |
Description | A preference marketplace is web based crowdsourcing approach to collect and aggregate information and extract new knowledge from a large diverse group around a specific idea or concept and identify the most promising. This web application was conceived, designed and implemented into it s present form by the Harris Research Group to allow anyone, anywhere, to have a say in the design and development of any product feature or idea through a game-like interface. In particular, to crowdsource the design of food products. This is the first time this approach has ever been used to provide a direct input into food product design, ultimately placing the consumer into the food product design and development loop and its manufacture. The software has been used to date in several workshops involving a number of participants for food actual food products from my industrial collaborators. The results of these workshops can be found by following the DOIs provided. |

Results and Impact | The RECODE Sandpit aimed to bring together academics and industrial organisations to develop ideas for feasibility studies. The event attracted an audience of 30 participants from 12 different UK institutions with 5 industrial organisations and 2 funding bodies and groups were formed to propose research ideas in line with the Network Vision on re-distributed manufacturing. The event resulted in the proposition of multiple future research projects, several of which will be developed further for submission to funding bodies, and new collaborations across disciplines and institutions. |

Results and Impact | The Network is organising the RECODE International Symposium, bringing together industrial organisations and research institutions from around the world to share and create future visions for manufacturing focusing on the topics of customisation, re-distribution and technology. The Symposium offers: six parallel sessions, internationally recognised keynote speakers, networking sessions and a symposium dinner. Currently at preparation stage, the preparation activities and engagement with speakers have already led to some tentative plans for future activities after the end of the Network funding. |

Results and Impact | The Schmidt MacArthur Fellowship is a 12 month international programme on the circular economy open to postgraduate students in design, engineering and business from a network of fourteen Partner Universities. Each year the Fellowship also runs a Wild Card competition to identify one or two exceptional students from any other universities in the world, to win a place on the programme. The programme includes a week long summer school in the UK, an online support programme and a cash bursary, as well as the opportunity to link with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's wider programme of activities and networks. In 2015 one of the fellows conducted his research in collaboration with the RECODE Network and he and his mentor (Dr Charnley) disseminated knowledge and findings of the network through the Schmidt-MacArthur Fellowship programme and summer school. This resulted in detailed discussion on re-distributed manufacturing and also led to a collaborative partnership and further funding with Cisco. |

Results and Impact | The Science for the Green Economy event brought together an audience of academics, industrial organisations, practitioners, third sector organisations, policy makers and postgraduate students to debate technology and governance for a green economy. Presentation of research related to the RECODE Network initiated questions and discussion around technology-led de-centralised manufacture and resulted in a number of requests from new contacts for further information. |
