Searching for supersymmetric (SUSY) signals in multileptonic decays of weakly interacting sparticles using ATLAS Run-2 data

Abstract
This student will work on the Sussex-led analysis searching for supersymmetric (SUSY) signals in multileptonic decays of weakly interacting sparticles using ATLAS Run-2 data. He will also work on the characterization of Standard Model processes that are backgrounds for multileptonic SUSY searche (eg, ttV processes). The student will also work on aspects of the ATLAS High-Level Trigger and on detector and trigger operations. It is expected that he will spend a period of Long-Term Attachment at CERN.

PI Contribution | I partecipate actively in a international exchange between my university and the Institute of High Energy Physics (Chinese Academy of Sciences). The programme is intended to create solid network and collaboration between the two different institutes. Along with my analysis, this regards other analyses my institute is involved in. I visited the IHEP in Beijing for a series of workshops in January 2019. |
Collaborator Contribution | Colleagues from China came visiting my institute last year and another trip is expected to happen later in 2019. |
Impact | Exchange of ideas and feedback on current analysis were particularly useful to me and gave me quite interesting insights by more-experienced people. Also, we have discussed possible future projects about actual combination of results between my work and theirs that will be extremely beneficial to delivering final results from the ATLAS collaboration. |

Results and Impact | The aim of the conference was to share with other students from the university out PhD activities and latest results. Title of my presentation was "Run-2 searches for electroweak SUSY particles decaying via Wh bosons to three-lepton final states at ATLAS", and abstract: "The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) enables us to explore new physics beyond our current knowledge of elementary particles and their fundamental interactions. After the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012, one of the main goals of the ATLAS and CMS experiments is to understand how well the Standard Model (SM) gives a complete and exhaustive description of the "particle world". Among all the new theories which are accessible at the LHC centre of mass energy, Supersymmetry (SUSY) is one of the most accredited. In particular, the search for electroweak production of SUSY particles is a very exciting aspect of the SUSY searches within the ATLAS experiment physics program, including within so-called "natural SUSY" scenarios. In my talk I will discuss the search for direct production of chargino-neutralino followed by decays into three-lepton final states via intermediate Wh bosons. This analysis allows the first Run-2 exploration of specific electroweak SUSY models and yet-to-be-inspected regions of the SUSY parameter space." My talk was awarded as "Best presentation" of the conference. |

Results and Impact | I welcomed a class of students from a national school when they came visiting CERN in Geneva in autumn 2018. Students asked me various questions about my research project and broadly about the physics searches targeted by the ATLAS. They were also very curious about the everyday life of a researcher and the work environment at CERN. |
