Biomethanisation of CO2 in anaerobic digestion plants
Lead Research Organisation:
University of Southampton
Department Name: Faculty of Engineering & the Environment
Abstract
The research will create a hybrid anaerobic digestion process in which hydrogen made from renewable energy sources (e.g. wind and photovoltaics) is used to produce biomethane at more than 95% purity. The process therefore provides an efficient in situ biogas upgrading technique which will maximise the conversion of the available carbon in waste biomass into a fuel product that has a wide range of applications, including short-term storage for grid balancing and use as a vehicle fuel. The process is likely to be more environmentally friendly and sustainable than current methods for biogas upgrading as there is reduced process loss of methane. The target is to develop the system for use in the water industry where there is a large potential to integrate it into existing infrastructure and to maximise the use of process heat and other by-products. A second targeted application is at a smaller scale on farms, where there is an abundant supply of waste biomass and a lack of suitable biogas upgrading plant.

Simultaneous biomethanisation of endogenous and imported CO2 in organically loaded anaerobic digesters
in Applied Energy
Description | The research to date has shown that it is possible to convert a conventional anaerobic digester into a biomethanisation reactor, which simultaneously upgrades the biogas and increases the biomethane yield. There are indications that this is likely to be the most appropriate technology in several types of application and scales of operation. The research also indicates that this is a potentially effective means of decarbonising wastewater treatment. A key finding is that the microbial community can rapidly adapt to the changing conditions with hydrogenotrophic populations becoming dominant in a short period. Rapid tests to follow these changes have been developed. |
Exploitation Route | The technology is ready to be taken forward at pilot and demonstration scales in conjuction with industrial partners, to explore the effects and potential benefits of scale-up. |
Sectors | Agriculture Food and Drink Energy Environment Manufacturing including Industrial Biotechology |
Description | After a lull in which policy and industry attention was more focused on aspects of the proposed hydrogen economy, we are now receiving enquiries from governmental, funding and industry bodies on CO2 biomethanisation: this has led to preparation of a report jointly funded by Carbon Recycling Network (BB/S009795/1) and the Environmental Biotechnology Network (BB/S009795/1) on potential for implementation. A joint industry/academic workshop on microbial systems with gaseous feedstocks is taking place in March 2024 to develop a position statement and an additional workshop is planned for later this year to identify any policy and regulatory obstacles and propose actions for technology progression and implementation. |

Title | Whole shotgun metagenome sequencing of AD microbiomes |
Description | The microbial community responsible for the biogas-producing anaerobic digestion (AD) process used to recover energy from waste is poorly characterised and likely contains many organisms not required for gas generation. Metagenomics approaches offer insights into AD communities that could potentially be exploited to improve the conversion of biomass to biogas, but distinguishing between the biological and technical variability of samples from different sources makes generalisation of results challenging. To determine how different DNA extraction methodologies and sequencing approaches influence the perceived microbiome, we analysed technical replicates of 16S rRNA amplicons and whole shotgun metagenomes from different AD systems. Here we show that diversity measurements of the microbiome in AD samples were strongly influenced by extraction regimes and analysis methodology. 16S rRNA amplification resulted in over- and under-estimation of several taxonomic phyla compared to a PCR-free metagenomics approach. Samples extracted using mechanical methods displayed significantly lower diversity and fewer observed phylotypes than samples extracted by chemical and thermal lysis, which produced higher molecular weight DNA and showed the greatest diversity in community profiles. |

Year Produced | 2017 |
Provided To Others? | Yes |
Impact | Our results highlight that the most commonly used extraction and analysis protocols provide a skewed view of the diversity and species richness of the AD microbiome which is likely to extent to other samples. We suggest that methodological differences could be a significant source of variability among AD, and other, metagenomics studies. |

PI Contribution | The collaboration will assess the potential benefits of the implementation of hydrogen biomethanation in an existing AD plant at the Creed Enterprise Park in Stornoway. The Creed Park site has a variety of energy systems already installed including a waste fed AD plant and CHP, a wind turbine, an electrolyser and a thermal store, and a hydrogen vehicle refuelling station, the combination of which would make this an ideal site for a pilot demonstration of biomethanation. Initially the the work be a high level modelling study, enhanced by detailed process modelling of the H2AD process, initially predicting the improvements in produced biogas quality by the AD plant, and later quantifying the potential benefits of this on the wider integrated energy system. The contribution of the University of Sheffield will comprise of site data collection/processing, modeling of the AD system integrated with biomethanation, high level modelling of the integration of AD, biomethanation, wind and hydrogen refueling, and a summary report on the benefits in terms of electricity production, emission and revenue. |

Results and Impact | EBNet Webinar: Using Big Data Approaches to Understand Microbial Communities Thursday, 10th February 2022 at 13.00 - 14.15. The SESSION RECORDING is available here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QH0JK0X0Xw EBNet are hosting a series of specialist webinars to support knowledge exchange amongst members. "Using Big Data Approaches to Understand Microbial Communities". Hear the latest developments from top speakers and participate in the online chat to engage with questions. This fascinating session is brought to you by the Chairs: Dr Sarah Forrester, the Chong Group, Dept. of Biology, University of York & Dr Bing Guo. Dr Sarah Forrester is a PDRA within James Chong's group within the Biology department at the University of York. She gained her PhD at the University of Liverpool in 2016 using multi 'omic approaches to analyse parasite genomic data, and has worked since then on a range of microbial systems and used a variety of bioinformatic methods. She performs HPC driven microbial genomics research and delivers bioinformatics training. As a 2022 Software Sustainability fellow and a certified Software Carpentry instructor, she is passionate about instilling good bioinformatic practises into her training. She is also involved in the preparation and delivery of the material for Cloud-SPAN: Specialised analyses for environmental 'omics with Cloud-based High Performance Computing , see https://cloud-span.york.ac.uk/. TALK TITLE: INTRODUCTION TO THE EBNET BIOINFORMATICS WORKING GROUP Prof James Chong is a Royal Society Industry Fellow and Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of York, where he runs a research group exploiting a range of 'omics techniques to understand microbial community dynamics, as well as leading the EBNet Working Group "Bioinformatics Training for Microbial Environmental Biotechnologies". His group is involved in generating microbial community metagenomics, meta-transcriptomics and metabolomics datasets. His group use established analytical pipelines, but also develop their own bespoke scripts for data analysis. Insight into the application of 'omics techniques, and the ways in which they can be applied to environmental biotechnology use cases to greater understand microbial community dynamics, has driven his desire to develop bioinformatic training resources. This is currently being supported by the UKRI Grant Cloud-SPAN: Specialised analyses for environmental 'omics with Cloud-based High Performance Computing, and is co-led by James, see https://cloud-span.york.ac.uk/. Impact: enables the dissemination of the project details to a wider audience and generates registrations to current activities |
