Abstract
The implementation of open banking aimed to revolutionise banking by enabling data sharing through APIs with authorised third parties. However, six years on, only a small fraction of Brits use open banking-based services.
A few systemic issues may prevent widespread adoption: most financial firms face technology implementation challenges, cumbersome authorisation processes lead to high user drop-off rates, a lack of compelling consumer applications. These factors cause a negatively self-reinforcing cycle.
This project proposes a solution comprising a universal digital identity tool, allowing seamless authorisation passporting across providers, simplifying integration with legacy and modern systems, and enhancing user experience with compelling features. This approach addresses key barriers, promoting large-scale adoption and unlocking the full potential of open banking.
