A Next-Generation "NextGen" electrofusion welding control unit

Lead Participant: CALDERVALE TECHNOLOGY

Abstract

Caldervale Technology are a Dewsbury-based SME that manufacture tools for plastic-based water and gas distribution systems used in the utility, chemical and mining industries. Among these are electro-fusion control units; devices that power and control the joining of sections of pipe end-to-end.
The company have been a long term leader in this industry due to reliable and well-constructed products that can live up to the demands of industrial use.
Times change and to remain at the forefront of the industry the company must be innovative and forward thinking. We intend to achieve this through technological and practical advancements in our products:
• Enough memory to store a lifetime of weld data, which will be of great use when carrying out electro-fusion welding for extended periods in remote locations. This will improve QC by promoting accountability for each weld operation and also create an audit trail for asset managers.
• Remote control capability of the devices using smartphones, laptops and Bluetooth connectivity alongside real-time upload of measured data.
• Incorporation of a battery allowing generators to be switched off and reallocated during data acquisition through the cooling period.
• Modular construction; housing the transformer in a separate unit, easily detached in the event of overheating and thermally insulated from the more sensitive control unit electronics.
• New design that reduces input prices and simplifies manufacture by incorporating modularity and re-using common components.
