Abstract
High performance consumer electrical goods are often characterised by an expectation from the consumer of quiet, almost noiseless operation. Noise from operation of the drive electronics, electromagnetic effects in the motor, buffeting effects from the impeller blades and mechanical friction inside ball bearings are all detectable and unwanted, representing wasted energy, excess wear and a perception of poor quality. This PhD will comprehensively tackle these noise sources using the coupled design of motor magnetics and drive control.
