Complex decision making and user integration for drone and swarm capability

Abstract

PhD based around autonomous drone technology, application,
interfaces and decision making is to add to the base knowledge of this nascent and rapidly emerging
subject. Whilst drone usage is expanding rapidly, developing effective and compliant autonomous
drone capability is relatively new, especially drone swarm management for military uses.
I have spent a career within the aviation test and evaluation domain developing military capability, especially
integration of new software and equipment into aircraft and mission systems. Delivering a safe and
effective cockpit experience has been a core aim alongside delivering an effective combat capability:
they are symbiotic in nature. Part of the test and evaluation role has been integrating drones into the
airspace as effective and safe air machines for operators, wingmen and the wider community. To
develop and integrate effective autonomous military drones integrating AI/ML will require new thinking
from an understanding of the challenges of the mission and complex decision-making protocols will
require rethinking and a new paradigm of integration.
