Female prophetic leadership: An exploration of its liberative future in present-day Jewish patriarchal religious structure

Lead Research Organisation: University of Leeds
Department Name: School of PRHS

Abstract

This research heeds the feminist call to action of the late Rabbi Sheila Shulman to take up a "prophetic position" and change the world (2005). As a female rabbi, assuming prophetic position (predicated on charisma, misogyny, and androcentric authority), while also working within patriarchal institutions in a role not created with women in mind, is profoundly challenging. The purpose of this project is to identify the obstructions impeding UK female Jewish clergy, and through sacred texts and stepping into the prophetic together, to deconstruct systems of oppression underpinning social and religious institutions.
