Description Some highlights of our research project on emotion regulation include:

• New theoretical models of emotion self-regulation and interpersonal regulation, and a new resource allocation model of self-control.

• A meta-analysis of existing research that identified categories of regulation strategy that appear to be more effective in regulating emotions, as well as factors that moderate their effectiveness. In a follow-up study, we found that individuals who used the most effective strategies most frequently had better affect-related outcomes 1-yr later.

• Identification of brain areas involved in i) interpersonal emotion regulation and ii) automatic control of emotion regulation.

• Empirical evidence concerning the links between interpersonal emotion regulation and a variety of outcomes including risk-taking, quality of relationships, job performance, and the well-being of employees.

• Discovering that mood appraisal patterns can distinguish between bipolar disorder and unipolar depression, and between symptoms of hypomania and depression.

• Development of effective clinical interventions for affect-related problems including a protocol that helps individuals with bipolar disorder manage their mood swings as part of their cognitive behavioural therapy, and a new transdiagnostic therapy.

• Demonstrating that simple interventions in the form of if-then plans can be used to overcome the effect of mood on risky behaviour, reduce social anxiety, and augment the effectiveness of self-help materials.

•Production of new validated measures of emotion regulation.
Exploitation Route Emotion regulation is something that everyone does on a daily basis and it affects many aspects of people's lives, including how good they feel, how well they perform, and how they get on with others. Our research has identified effective forms of emotion regulation, shown how emotion regulation can be modified, and how emotion regulation problems can be treated. It is therefore relevant to a range of non-academic contexts and we have worked with a wide range of organisations and individuals during the course of the research (including healthcare workers, shop workers, driving instructors, athletes, prisoners, teams, couples, parents). Our research on emotion regulation can be put to use wherever there is a need to enhance well-being, relationships, and performance. Areas where it is particularly relevant include: treatment of mental health problems (such as bipolar disorder and social anxiety), competitive performance (e.g. sport), occupational health (well-being and relationships at work), and personal relationships.

Description Research from the EROS project has contributed to the treatment of mental health problems, produced interventions that can be used to enhance well-being and performance in applied settings, been put to practical use in sport, and raised public awareness of the relevance of emotion regulation in everyday life. The research has featured in TV/radio broadcasts, in newspapers, and in professional and lifestyle magazines. We have run workshops for mental health, business, and sport professionals, conducted events for the public (including an interactive exhibition) and user groups, and worked with a range of organisations. Over 75,000 people took part in our research and over 15,000 people from more than 100 countries visited our project website

Results and Impact How do you make sure that the employees in your organisation have high quality jobs that foster high well-being and performance? The aim of this session will be to show how organisations can craft better quality jobs through the use a participative job redesign tool called 'scenarios planning'. The tool allows organisations to respond positively to events that can have an adverse effect on the structure and content of jobs - such as downsizing, departments merging or splitting and the introduction of new products or services - by envisioning a range of different job scenarios and helping organisations select the job design that maximizes both employee well-being and performance. We will illustrate the use of this tool by drawing on a successful job redesign project conducted at a Driving Standards Agency call centre that improved employee well-being, employee performance and led to a reduction in the sick rate of employees.

Results and Impact Rumination is the excessive dwelling on problems Nolen-Hoeksema & Morrow, 1991, whilst co-rumination is excessive problem-talk.

Is co-rumination social? If co-rumination were confined to dyads only, it should not predict social communication outside the dyad.If it does, co-rumination is a network process.

In this study we followed graduate students through their _rst term (MSc or DPhil) Oxford N = 31 61% female mean age 24.9 years (SD = 2.59) observing their co-rumination style.

Conclusions1) Co-rumination is best understood at the level of the network 2) Formation of co-rumination dyads may be based on people avoiding co-ruminators. 3) Rumination and worry seem to encourage people to seek social contact, but (co-)rumination deters others.
