Abstract
Craft practices played a key role in major cultural transactions between the Islamic and Christian worlds in
8th to 15th century Iberia. My research will partially reconstruct the 12th century Islamic glass workshop at
calle Puxmarina, Murcia - the only complete medieval example discovered in Spain. Innovative
archaeological experiments will address questions of glass production techniques, furnace stoking and pollutants, combining experience in glass production technology with original ethnographic studies of
current glass practitioners in creative and historical traditions, to illuminate the practice of glass
production in medieval Iberia, transforming our understanding of relations between medieval craft
knowledge and early-modern science.
