Closing the loop on homogeneous catalysts with high value ligands

Lead Research Organisation: University of Edinburgh
Department Name: Sch of Chemistry

Abstract

While there is a recycle loop in place for recovering platinum group metals from homogeneous catalysts, there are considerable financial and sustainability benefits to be gained from also recovering and reusing their ligands. This is particularly the case if ligands require multistep synthesis, or purification, or are chiral.
The purpose of this project is to find recovery routes for both metal and ligand from some of JM's highest value and/or volume products. The benefits would include increasing the cost-effectiveness of catalytic processes for customers, decreasing the environmental burden of disposing of the ligands, and providing valuable understanding of the end of life, deactivated state of the catalyst.
