Impact of female homelessness on children's educational experience in inner-city schools

Abstract
I would like to explore the perceived impact of female homelessness on children's educational experience in inner-city schools. The research will explore the ways in which female homelessness has impacted upon the child's educational experience and focus on critical events and coping strategies that women and children, in positions of homelessness, employ.
It will consider how educational pathways are navigated and whether constraints are faced when it comes to educational decision making. The research will question whether identities of both the mother and child are influenced and shaped by their experiences of homelessness in urban spaces. I hope to undertake this research by conducting semi-structured interviews with 30 homeless women and their children to gain an in depth narrative of their experiences. Bourdieusian theory will be drawn upon to understand the ways in which habitus, field and capital shape the experiences of educational decision making whilst homeless. The data will be analysed thematically once collected. This research is timely and imperative as the number of families becoming homeless is increasing, though there is a lack of investigation in to the impact this homelessness is having on children's experiences of, ad engagement with, education.
