SIP NTP - A ground breaking innovation in quality availability and security of Voice transmission using Internet Protocol over low cost public broadband networks to enable SMEs to realise fully the benefits of IP telephony at affordable costs

Lead Participant: AXTAN LIMITED

Abstract

Axtan proposes to develop a low cost Network Termination Point (NTP) that will facilitate
high quality and highly resilient transmission of voice over low cost public broadband
networks using VoIP. This unit will accommodate two diversely provided broadband links
(initially ADSL) and will communicate with central servers to detect any degradation in
quality or availability of the primary link and switch call signalling to the alternative path in
real time. Media will be continuously transmitted over both low cost links to provide a
statistically significant increase in audio quality. The technology provides an integrated
system which delivers the solution and provides a level of service quality, availability, and
resilience previously unavailable to IP telephony users at a cost affordable to SMEs. Uniquely
it will provide an enhanced level of security against attacks on an SMEs voice system, such as
denial of service attacks, as an inherent feature. Costs of these services will be significantly
lower to Telecommunications Service Providers than traditional services such as ISDN. This
combined with the superiority of the offering will open up the use of new business efficiency
applications to SMEs which will increase their competitiveness and lower operational costs.
This new technology advance will also support new applications in the remote monitoring,
access control and video monitoring sectors.
In summary it will benefit SMEs by:
Reducing the costs of strategic voice communications
Enhancing its quality, reliability and security
Enable/encourage the adoption of business efficiency using convergerged voice & data
applications.
Enable secure home/remote working
It will benefit Telecommunications Service providers by:
Allowing them to manage their networks to the end user premises
Improved network quality, resilience and security
Fewer end user complaints
Lower costs of customer service
Improved ability to market Service Standards
New revenue opportunities
